This recording from the Val Doonican Show was made november 18, 1970. It was recorded from aerial reception on a Sony CV2000B video tape recorder. This is what the person who recorded it says: "We used to watch BBC broadcasts from Wales, and had an aerial right on the top of a 5 storey house in Dublin to get the signal over the mountains and the Irish Sea !!. I still remember so vividly the frustration of having the signal fade away during a critical programme - it almost seemed to depend on the wind."
So sorry for the poor picture quality. This is probably the only surviving recording from this show. This show is on the "Lostshows.com" list, sadly not to broadcast standards. But a nice document to see back.

  • Did the CV2000B record both fields? I've seen the Steptoe and Son that was converted from 405 line home tape and is de-interlaced and very pixelated.

  • No, the CV2000B is a skip field machine. But the original picture is much better than what you see on Youtube. The noise in this clip is from poor reception signal.

  • If it only records one field, then how does it re-create a 405-compatible signal to play back on the TV?

  • The same field was read twice. Search for skip field vtr on google to read all about it.

  • Good sound quality, at least! Thanks for posting.

  • Lovely

I think they should devise an algorithm for digital machines that make them distort lke analogue when they distort. I hate the pixellated clusters that happen these days, but I love those old fashioned squiggly lines.

    Awful song.
