how to do image reference in Front / Top / Side viewport?

Very easy. Make the veiwport active, and simply press F3, this makes the veiw mode Smooth + Highlights. To go back to wireframe veiwmode, simply hit F3 again to disable Smooth + Highlights. You might notice where it says your current veiw mode at the top left corner of each port, if you click this you will get a list of possible modes. F3 = toggle smooth + highlights. F4 = toggle edge faces. Gd luck with ur models =]
