Their daughter was 16 years old when her father said she would quit school and marry a suitor in their rural village in Egypt. But, encouraged by the women's empowerment program Arab Women Speak Out (AWSO), Um Hashem persuaded her husband that early marriage and stopping education would be harfmul to their daughter. Funded by USAID, AWSO is implemented by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs and Save the Children. This is part of a series of video self-portraits of women who have improved their lives with the encouragement of AWSO women's discussions groups.
