Dear Companion is Espers vocalist Meg Baird's first solo album. It was released in 2007 to critical praise. The album contains three traditional folk songs, four covers of more recent songs, and two original songs written by Baird (Wikipedia)
I have heard Jacqui McShee (Pentangle) sing this song and another singer, an Irish folk singer, Anne Byrne record this song in the 60's. Jacqui's version available to hear on Youtube but not Anne Byrne's (although there are few Anne Byrne songs on Youtube).
I really like this version by Meg very, very much!
I first heard this ballad in the 60's on an Album by Joan Baez - Meg Baird's version is breath-taking - she nails it on every level - the vocals are perfection and she tells this story so very sweetly...
i think you mean anne briggs maybe, she did a eally nice version from the 60s
