WASHINGTON Stepping into history, Barack Hussein Obama grasped the reins of power as America's first black president on Tuesday, declaring the nation must choose "hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord" to overcome the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

In frigid temperatures, an exuberant crowd of more than a million packed the National Mall and parade route to celebrate Obama's inauguration in a high-noon ceremony. Waving and cheering in jubilation, they stretched from the inaugural platform at the U.S. Capitol toward the Lincoln Memorial in the distance.

With 11 million Americans out of work and trillions of dollars lost in the stock market's tumble, Obama emphasized that his biggest challenge is to repair the tattered economy left behind by outgoing President George W. Bush.....

  • Well 4 1 I don't claim 2 speak 4 ALL blk people! I don't know about u but I am as equal 2 ANY person n e where. All I'm say'n is that we shared a taste of what whts n America savor daily. Whether u feel it was right or wrong. Ur statement shows that u didn't read deep enough n2 what I was say'n. I didn't claim PAYBACK but FAIRNESS n a courpt system. 4 whts 2 b afraid cause blks r joyful is ridiculous, as is ur reply. What r they really afraid of? Call me n e thing u like, reading is fundamental.

  • You don't speak for black people. Blacks are not equal to whites in America as too often they are discriminated against through programs like welfare, affirmative action and other racially based fiscal programs that hurt them.

All you want the system to be corrupt in the favour of blacks? That's equality? Your statement shows you don't think blacks are good enough to play by the same rules. YOU are the racist. You can't claim payback for the unjustices faced by those who happen to look like you.

  • Kingston556, idiots like u should b scared cause it means blk people everywhere may really have the chance 4 real equality. I know this may throw u off ur ideaology but Blk weren't happy that OJ got off, we were just shocked that the system did for us what it does for wht people everyday. We had never recieved wht justice before, just like we never had a blk President before. Its a time of 1st. Not cause we want payback, we want whats fair. So try not to be to afraid, and do right by all people.

  • Hope this is not another Bush...:(
