Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard was in New Zealand for talks with with Prime Minister John Key.
Ms Gillard also made an historic address in New Zealand's parliament, hoping to boost ties across the Tasman Sea.
Speaking to the press in Wellington on Wednesday, Gillard pledged greater economic unity between Australia and New Zealand.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has praised the relationship between Australia and New Zealand, saying the bond is like family.
Prime Minister Gillard said she was privileged to be the first leader of a foreign nation to address the New Zealand parliament.
During her speech Gillard spoke about the "mateship" and shared defense history between the two countries, and expressed her condolences on the recent death of a New Zealand soldier in Afghanistan.
During her visit Gillard signed a new investment protocol which will increase the threshold of investments between the two nations. A trade agreement she said was "envied around the world."
Prime Minister Gillard will visit New Zealanders who volunteered after the Queensland floods before returning to Australia on Thursday. She said she plans to meet New Zealand Prime Minister John Key more regularly.
