came across these 30 plus Orca's out at Gt Barrier Island in New Zealand, was lucky enough to have a Video camera that would film underwater as well.
so ive call this close encounters, as they got very close like within a meter of the boat.
can anyone tell me why they roll over when filmed like this????

what type of Orca are they? they look like inland type but they also give impression of the off shore and transit types. does anyone know? great vid. :)

You have amazing footage, I'd be too chicken to do that I think.
To answer your question why they roll over. It's because they can see better below them, for hunting fish or mammals, so they can't see that well above them. So when they roll over, they can see you better and check out what you are doing. :)

He rolled over because he was playing and preforming for you. Orca's like attention if they are in an area where theres humans they tend to be friendlier then deep see ocean Orca's

Wow! One male has a somewhat curved dorsal, he must spend alot of time at the surface to have gravity push down on it so much.

this video is the best that i've seen on killer whales..i love them..absolutely my favorite animals alog with dolphins...great video..could watch it again and again
