We'd heard that about 10km from the top at both sides of the pass the road condition deteriorated considerably and this proved to be true. Still it was no worse than other roads we'd ridden (and much better than some!).
The pass itself was far from peaceful, a generator chugs away constantly and there's a heavy army presence. But the view makes up for it. Looking south you can see the peaks of the Great Himalayan range, looking north you see the seemingly endless wild snow covered Karakoram Range.
