Actually that's not bad by Cairo standards. Getting through Giza to October Bridge is crazy bad, and Alexandria is actually worse than Cairo in many ways. I'd much rather take the metro (or tram, in Alex) than go anywhere by car. Driving in either place is bad for your blood pressure... too damn stressful and frustrating.
yes! it is unbelievable for westerners that such a traffic system indeed works. But it works fine. very fine. Not only in Egypt. You need no signs, no wannabe righterous cops or heavy regulations. The only thing you need is to chill and a good working horn.
