This is a powerful tool available to Google folks and their partners. One day I am sure it will be open to the world or something like it. It measures how much electricity you are using every time you turn an appliance on or off - it is your electrical footprint as it were. When we turned on the oven the meter spiked - not so good. This video focuses on another common appliance, but demonstrates how this tool can make us all a lot more energy conscious.

  • Hi - Google folks contacted me about creating a video about their PowerMeter. Basically it measures the amount of energy you are using in your house. So when you put on the air conditioning - you can see how it spikes up on the meter. It is designed to make you more aware of your energy use so you can regulate it better and conserve more. They wanted a video. I produced it for fun. Hope that answers your question. Take care. - David

  • We hired an electrician to hook it up. We hooked it up to the main line coming into the house. Then we connected it to a modem and that was it. Then we turned on the stove and watched it shoot up - the same for the dryer and of course the air conditioner. No need to pay for the Energy Detective. The PowerMeter does help to raise awareness and consciousness about energy use and conservation. Take care and best wishes. -David

  • you scare me.

  • WTF was that?

  • So, I haven't been following GPM for a bit.

What setup is required to upload the powermeter stats to google? :)

I know you need a induction reader, like The Energy Detective, but hows that make it to the interwebs?
