The art collections in the museums, the private collections, the great art exhibitions, the architecture and the music and cinema festivals all confirm a cultural vivacity that has its roots in the history of Ticino. When visiting the museums dotted around the region, collected together by the Ticino Tourist Board in a practical guidebook, you can often encounter cultural treasures and exhibitions of international importance (Museum of Modern Art in Lugano for example).
Walking through towns or villages situated at the bottom of valleys, you can discover traces of a union between the old traditional culture and modern buildings. This is mainly due to the great names of modern Ticinese architecture, such as Mario Botta, Luigi Snozzi, and Aurelio Galfetti).
For several years, Ticino has also laid claim to a prestigious first: it is actually one of the few places in the world where, over such a small area, there are not one but two sites mentioned in UNESCO's World Heritage list (the castles of Bellinzona, included on the list in 2000, and Monte San Giorgio, in 2003).
