Her voice has been described as powerful, unforgettable and haunting; her style compared to that of legendary greats ranging from Billy Holiday to Janis Joplin. And yet she is modest of her own abilities. When questioned, this songstress with the thick head of hair and impish grin remains humble of her gospel fused talents.
"I know I can sing," she begins with a flash of deep dark eyes, that reflect her Welsh, Pakistani and Fijian background. "Don't get me wrong. It's just that I'm a perfectionist. Never satisfied, you know? I love to involve myself in the expression of songwriting, in every aspect."
Her musical influences are an eclectic mix of jazz, punk, blues, reggae, hard rock and raga, and are reflected in her work. "I like to take bits and pieces of influences," she says softly. "A dash of Thelonious Monk mixed in with some Nina Hagen or Bonnie Raitt. They mix very well with my passion for world beat, gospel and jazz, and I'm able to write from a variety of perspectives."
