Perception of Patterns In Timeless Influence
By Melati Suryodarmo

In the new work Perception of Patterns In Timeless Influence Melati presented a scene reminiscent of baroque chiaroscuro painting tradition, where she in a kind of tableau vivant, throughout the duration of five-hour performance, remained in stillness together with a group of seven rabbits. She was inside a box with a glass front reminding of a large painting or a museum vitrine. The box was placed towards the back of the room allowing the audience a frontal perspective of the work. A melancholic and introvert but also humoristic picture arose in the meeting of the impulsive rabbits and the focused artist. At intervals an opera singer and a violinist (Angelica Asp and David Hovstadius) entered the room and performed the aria "Blute Nur" from Bachs Matheus Passion The music created an intimate connection between the three, and by repeating this pattern their wordless communication deepened throughout the duration of the performance.
Perception of Patterns In Timeless Influence combines theories about perception philosophy and psychology with mythological ideas of animals being connected with the gods, in order to explore human beings' possibilities to communicate with animals. Melatis interest in mythology lies foremost in its philosophical aspects; why do humans chose to represent spirituality in the form of animals? How can human beings learn from the animals that they have a worth despite other people or other people's thoughts?
'I want to return to the ancient cultures idea about learning the animal character for getting powerful influence for the human behavior.'
