Feb. 25, 2010 - Avi Lewis introduces the inaugural David Lewis Lecture Series in commemoration of his granfather, organized by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (http://policyalternatives.ca).

This was the first in a series of lectures in honour of David Lewis (19091981), a leading labour lawyer, life-long social democrat, a founder of the NDP and its national leader from 1970 to 1975.

A superb tribute to David Lewis, an exceptionally gifted political figure and one of the most powerful voices for social justice Canada has ever seen.

I hope that footage can be posted of Lewis in fully oratorical flight. He was a magnificent speaker--not for nothing was he the first Canadian to be elected head of the Oxford Union Debating Society.

I am eternally grateful for those "bundists" like David Lewis and their defense of peoples rights to gather together to protect and foster their well being. What we have now is corporate socialism. Corporations don't plan that their children should have food.

So explains please Avi why was it that your South Ontario centric family ruined the Mid West most beloved political party the NDP. The very party your family claims credit for is the very party your very family ruined and turned into a wishy washy piece of useless crap. Avi your father is now a fool fawning at the feet of Bill Clinton. You whitewash the history of the Left into Soviet versus Social Democrat as if anarchism never existed. What kind of career wouid you have without your surname ?

Avi Lewis should not rule running for Parliament. Political journalism is a noble and necessary vocation but it's not incompatible with a political career. E.g., Douglas Fisher managed to be an MP and a columnist as did Michael Foot, who edited and contributed to Tribune whilst a Labour MP. Roy Hattersley, former deputy leader of the Labour Party, is a prolific writer and continues to sit in Parliament.

Anyway, Canada urgently needs more progressives in Parliament of the calibre of Avi Lewis!
