@dailystar1 I think as a result of this, horses were not permitted to run in this or the fox hunters and then the National on Saturday. While it wasn't done regularly there were a few that did that. The ones that come to memory were Rolls Rambler 1982, Pontyz Pass 1984, Churchtown Boy 1977...Im sure there are a few others.

Great to see this again, i remember being very impressed by little Cyfor Malta,
I wish they had left the start as it is here, instead in bringing it half a furlong closer, its not really cut down on the fallers at the first.
I love the national fences, i used to like the John Parret race too .

im sophie hughes and john is my grandad. im pleased about this and the spirit of horses remains in my family.

griffins bar was a dodgy jumper and his connections should not have aimed at the national fences to be honest.
-
griffins bar who fell at the second....ran in the national 2 days later on the sat and sadly broke a shoulder .r.i.p
-
shame as i think this horse could have been one of the real greats until the injury...he jumped these fences brilliantly
-
shame i think cyfor should have run in the national that year or def the year after rather than the gold cup
I think he may have been too young to legally run in the 1998 National. He became injured after his 1999 Pillar win so couldn't have ran in either the Gold Gup or National.
