I live in Gilbert and looked out the kitchen window looking at the San Tan Mountains and the wall was coming right at us. Only had time to grab my still camera and not the video. Once it hit, we could not see across the street the visibility was so bad.

@Peglomaniac. They tend to come mainly from the southern part of the state where its mainly desert, However I have seen them come from the west and on a rare occasion from the east.

These duststorms, otherwise known as haboobs, are the result of decaying summer thunderstorms over the dry desert floor. Cold air downdrafts from the top of these giant thunderstorms (fueled by surface temps of 110 degrees or more), fall straight down from high altitude and hit the desert floor. The subsequent outflow winds pick up the dust in a huge wall and can push outward for 100+ miles. Low visibility is the biggest danger from these storms as well as horrific air quality.
