More on the global reactions to Tibet. The head of the Tibetan parliament-in-exile on Wednesday addressed the European Parliament in Belgium. He called attending the Olympics a 'moral issue.' Here's more:
STORY:
Karma Chophel is the speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile. He's on a tour around Europe to raise awareness of the situation in Tibet.
[Karma Chophel, Speaker, Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile]:
''Our stance is that the Olympics should take place so that China should conform to the international rules and laws. That is why. Now it is left to the individuals and to the countries to decide according to their conscience and their moral stand.''
Chophel added he thinks unrest will continue in Tibet because both sides are really determined.
[Karma Chophel, Speaker, Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile]:
"So the determination from both sides are very strong, from the Chinese side to suppress, from the Tibetan side to sacrifice.''
China says 13 people were killed during the riots in Tibet and China last week. The Tibetan government-in-exile says their contacts in Tibet verified 140 deaths.
Meanwhile the President of the European parliament agreed with Chophel, questioning whether politicians should attend the Games' opening ceremony."
[Hans Geert Poettering, European Parliaments President]:
"I genuinely say that all politicians must ask themselves whether they can attend the opening ceremony if China fails to take part in dialogue."
Yesterday, Beijing began allowing foreign media limited access to Lhasa. But there is no word yet on any dialogue with the Dalai Lama.
