Here I am "semi" sight-reading (clams and all) through Keith Emerson's "Fugue", "Benny the Bouncer", and "Karn Evel 9- 2nd Impression" on my kid's digital piano. I say "semi" because I used to play them in a band over 30 years ago but haven't touched them since, so it's not officially sight-reading. I transcribed this stuff when I was 12 and have never fixed the errors of my youthful ears, so it's not completely accurate, but you'll get the general idea. I slowed 'em down quite a bit to reduce mistakes and injury; the action on this keyboard is HORRIBLE! Seeing those clips of my more recent E.L.P. tribute band's debut gig from 11 years ago on YouTube (and the positive comments) inspired me to dust off some of my old Emerson transcriptions. The dude sure wrote some great music. Unfortunately, we didn't play any of these tunes in that band. The camera was still rolling and caught me fiddling around with some standards, so I thought I'd include 'em. Nothing to do with E.L.P., but a little improv, followed by a bit of "Round Midnight", "Lush Life", and "Stablemates". Kudos to my kid for having Corea, Patitucci, Weckl, and Ohm posters on his wall. Although it would be kinda cool to have one of Kate Beckinsale to look at... :)

  • Nice job! I liked the KE9 2nd Impression stuff the best. Keep in mind that your abilities now (and at age 12) likely surpass those that I will ever reach in my lifetime!

  • Thanks, Ben! I might have been better 35 years ago than I am now :) Just keep workin' hard on your craft, and the results will come. Ditto for me, and everyone else!

  • Hello Fusionshead. Thanks for comming back.

It was around 2:12 (in your video). I was mistaken it to be something of Alberto Ginastera. What was it then ?

    Karn Evil 9 - 2nd impres ?

Sorry about that "Correctos". It was not to be rude. Its a slang for totally correct played music, but like a computer would play it. (no swing or really temperature, you know)

Anyway, its a great pleasure listening to your playing. Im a guitarist, so I only have my ears in this matter.

  • Hey strat,

It is "Karn Evel 9; 2nd Impression", starting at 2:12. I didn't think "correctos" was meant to be derogatory, but my playing IS really stiff here, and the tempo is all over the map. But considering the circumstances, I'm ok with it. Just the fact that you are familiar with ELP's music, tells me your ears are in good shape! Thanks...

  • A bit static, but then again, its sheet-music.

Why did you slow down the "Benny the bouncer" piece ? I never heard Ginastera´s music played so "correctos" before.

  • Hey strat,

ALL the pieces were taken at a slower tempo. Please click on "more info" to the right of the video for the explanation.

I'm not sure what "correctos" means, but there is no music by Ginastera here. Only Emerson, Strayhorn, Golson, and a Monk quote. Thanks for viewing!

  • Fantastic!!!

How about doing the Keith Emerson version of the Nutcracker!

  • Great gift you have, flawless, I like the sound of your keyboard, keep up the nice works!

  • @Fusionhead Keith often did steal themes from composers/ jazzers etc. so there could very likely be some Ginastera influence in there.

  • please note...keith emerson is having/or has had surgery...the japan tour canceled...

people....thoughts and prayers here.......this sounds serious.....

  • Beautiful! Could you please tell me where to find this sheet music? I've been looking for a long, long, long time. Thank you!!!

  • Un pur plaisir ... MERCI !

  • The Fugue was excellently executed. I just think you should try a somwhat softer touch and cleaner phrasing.. Or maybe it's an instrument thing?

Karn Evil 9 (the jazzy part) sound great but you don't seem to have quite the right arrangement. Maybe you picked it out yourself? I think I have the read arr somewhere.

  • beautiful!

  • Preferisco questa interpretazione all'originale.

  • Great performance man!!
