The track cameras malfunctioned on this one, so there is no soundtrack, and the film ends before she crosses the finish line. However, in a sign of the great things to come, she won her first race by 15 lengths, and set a new track record for that distance.

  • great horse

    died at age 3 too young :{

    it is weird how so many great horses have broken down on america tracks :{

  • Couldn't help but notice your member name. I'm almost finished with a song I started about Phar Lap. Not sure when I'll get it done. My hay baler guy needed some extra help, so I've been spending most of my days in the fields right now, baling hay. probably our most famous harness racer here in the States was Dan Patch. I have a song and video posted on him. Thanks for watching!

  • what year was this oktahahorses?

  • Ruffian knew what she was from day 1, all the great ones do. She had the heart,the drive,and an unlimited amount of sheer physical ability. She wanted to run and she took it personal if another horse tried to take the lead! They don't make many like her,she was special!! RIP Big Girl!

  • You can see the greatness from the moment she busted out of that starting gate. What a ride we had for the next two years! She is my favorite horse and always will be. Rest in peace, love.

  • @TheExoticAnimal She was trained in the u.s and raced most her starts there. U.s tracks differ majorly from Australian racetracks so i could understand if an Australian horse broke down there or vise versa. I have just seen a majority of U.S runners break down(like this) especially on dirt tracks. i'm not saying there's anything wrong with racing over there at all just thought maybe the dirt tracks had something to do with it prehaps

  • couldnt have Secretariat and Ruffian raced together since this was in 1974... so that would be a year after belmont... secretariat could of still raced her. I wonder if she would have survived though..

  • @all4pharlap its quite not un-usual actually, there are numbers of reasons and not to mention horses on foreign tracks break down alot to.

  • @ZenyattaLuvr I know, its just that their pasts seem so connected, yet so different. All of those horses are also really really good. I would add personal ensign to that list also.

  • @MsRockerGal44 i agree but i <3 them the same, mabey Z a lil more... if they raced how they normaly won, Ruffian would have whooped Z's butt. but if they both ran Ruffian style, idk who would win but it would be very close i assume...

  • @emmaleahmaria Barbaro isnt the only horse u can compare her to... there is also Man o War, Zenyatta, Eight Belles, Big Brown, Rachel Alexandra and Secretariat....

  • I saw her jump out of that gate and into first, I knew she was the best there ever was from the first time I heard about her in school. Just heard the name Ruffian, and I knew there was something about her that was special...

    I looked her up, and saw that she had broken down in a race, and then typed Ruffian in on Youtube, and a movie came up! I watched it, and then couldnt look at a horse for nearly a month....

  • i think ruffian is the greatest filly or mare to live, and that should not be disbuted. she won every race i think, and proved herself to be great. I am saddened that she did not make it as long as others have, but she made a mark on the thoroughbred world. I hope people realize this, and the greatness we witnessed, i never saw her run, as i am twelve, but i love her just the same. she was like a burning light, comparable only with the great barbaro. RIP ruffian and barbaro god bless you.

  • Ruffian is the greatest filly, if not horse of all times. Zenyatta comes next. But I think if those two had raced together, Ruffians determination would have won. Both are amazing fillies!

    Ruffian was like no other horse, rest in peace
