John Dowland's lute song was an instant hit--it's a great tune! Played on the archlute by David Tayler. From the San Francisco Early Music Ensemble Voices of Music Concert 2007.

  • Ese laúd es un sueño, una seda. Quiero uno aunque nunca vaya a tocar así!!

  • Excellent style of interpretation. Brilliant variations-improvisations. Delicate sound.

    Mr D.Tayler BRAVO!!!

  • What version are you playing there? I much prefer it to others I've heard and I would love to get tablature for it, as I also play archlute.

If you could point me in the direction of where I can find this version, I would be hugely grateful as I think the mellow sound of the archlute is great for Dowland's work, despite what purists might think.

    Thank you for inspiring me.

  • Thank you.

  • beautifully, profesionally played, nice tune, good quality sound. is good that such music is ever played any more.

  • The text is "now O now I needs must part", which follows the same melody.

  • Beautifully played David, so delicate!

  • There is no original sheet music for this song, there are only arrangements made by people who lived at the time of Dowland :)

  • I see, and the original sheet music of this song is in a vastly different assortment, then in modern notation, so yeah, I guess some improvs and key changes are bound to happen. Very good playing, I think you draw the notes out more than the more upbeat versions of this song.

  • Well, speaking for myself, I prefer this key for the type of ornaments I wish to play. It is quite common to find songs and solo pieces in versions which are a tone apart.
