Youth Violence - Is The Media Responsible?

With all the violence that appears to be sweeping the streets of the UK, I thought it would be interesting to find out if the Media, mainly Music / Video games and Television are to blame... Including scenes at Abstract Armi's 'Food Fights' video.

You are conflating correlation with causality. Young hoodlums may listen to rap music, that does not mean they are taking the lyrics as a guide for how to live their lives.

If you banned all rap music tomorow and replaced the tracks on their ipods with Beethoven, or a bit of John Denver, are you suggesting youth crime would suddenly stop?

Gang cultutre and youth violence is more to do with poverty, social depravation, lack of education/discipline and unemployment.

@DarkAngel182 I agree, your point is valid, some of the above mentioned do contribute towards gang culture and youth violence but they are not the whole. We must remember (used as an example only) the nazi's would have troops watch hate videos for hours on end in order to create some mental change in the soldiers personality/character. How many times does a developing young mind need to see glorified drug dealing, prostitution and murdering in the media to perceive it is 'cool' and right?

@subdotmedia Again I have to strongly disagree. Hate/propaganda videos are produced with the sole intention of promoting an ideology through misinfomation. Song lyrics, video games and films do no such thing, they are simply entertainment and are a reflection of the times we live in, not the cause of them. Many forms of media (comic books, songs, films etc) have been banned over the years under the beleif they caused antisocial behaviour. In each case, it did NOT lead to a reduction in crime.

@TheRedFlagWarrior No, I don't control the media, however I have studied it for years and also hold a Degree in TVP. This enables me to explain, with validity, that you need to open your eyes.

@TheRedFlagWarrior Obviously I understand that. This is about the 'youth'. As you are a 'mature adult', by now you will have worked out the way in which the world works and what is good for you and what is bad. Not all generations are at that level yet, and so this is an insight for those who don't realise. Also I don't have children, I was 21 at the time I produced this.

@wuuspigs That's a bit extreme and totally off subject. It is not about stopping a person from doing as they want in life, be that listening to gangsta rap, 80's pop or acid techno. It is about realising the media manipulation that exists, how personas are created (most gangsta rappers are not gangsters) and fed to the vulnerable (in this case, youth) in a glamourised fashion.
