My poor horse Red came up lame on Wednesday and is still hurting today (Friday).

Is this a hoof abscess? If so, I wish it would rupture and drain so he is not in so much pain.

The equine vet put a poultice on it but so far, he is no better. I just took all the wrapping off: that's what the blue stuff is left on his hoof.

Poor Red!

UPDATE May5th 2011: no abscess ever burst--the lameness lasted about a month and gradually went away. maybe it was knee or shoulder pain?

Still a mystery.

Anyone else ever seen this extreme lameness that was NOT an abscess?

  • @kymmadden when they don't stand in the bucket one of those soaking boots comes in handy. I just treated one case 2 weeks ago with an easyboot soaker. left the warm water and magnesium sulphate (epsom) salt for about 10 mins then soaked a poultice pad (you can also make one with salt and iodine paste) in water, plastered it on the bottom and wrapped with a baby's diaper, some vetex bandage and thick adhesive tape. Handler only returned to take it off 2 days later and the horse was new! =D

  • mine is same, one week now been same as him, had hole cut in hoof but nothing coming out, god i hope its not a month, poor horses x

  • aw poor thing!

  • @horsecrazieneigh I'm sure it's just an abscess. That exact walk is very typical. Good luck :)

  • ive watched this a few times. To me it does look a little swollen between the coronet and his pastern. you see him place is foot but when his weight is distributed on to his lower joints thats when he quickly shifts. he may have simply pulled or tore a tendon. if it does happen again without knowing how i would think it maybe something worth getting x-rays done and maybe even a nerve block to see exactly where the pain is coming from

  • Poor Red! Are you soaking his foot with salt in a bucket?
