  • How do they make a living? Do they all perform in other Pro Bands? I am refering to these premium staff bands not the little group playing down on the corner? Performing at this level requires a full time commitment. It is the same with any major symphony. They all get paid! I would understand if they all had other full time music gigs as it all takes countless hours. You can not live in New York as a volunteer! Don't tell me they work at the thrift store to pay the bills?

  • no, they are doctors, pastors, teachers, and students. They have jobs and lives outside of the band. And it's not full time music either, I believe they rehearse once and week and then travel one wknd every month. At least that is how it is with the Chicago Staff Band and I dont think the others would be much different. But believe me, I have several family members and friends in these bands, and there is no monetary gain. : ) It's just how the Salvation Army is...playing music to glorify god.

  • Now someone is telling me this is a volunteer band? Come on be real! The Salvation Army is a National faith based organization and is WELL FUNDED!! You do not assemble musicians with these abilites to perform on a volunteer basis! Lets be realistic! Musicians are most often professional and expect compensation for thier efforts. This how they make their living folks! That is what professional means and a generous amount for these players I might add! Who disagrees?

  • no, really....every salvation army band is founded on volunteers. there are youth bands, senior (adult) bands, and staff bands like this one. All members attend church at the Salvation Army in which they have grown up in and learned how to read and play music. and on sundays, the youth and senior bands perform. staff bands are just a collection of those people from different Salvation Army cities. But yeah, it's 100% volunteer.

  • As a graduate of the Navy School of Music and former member of the First Army New York Band, let me extend my most sincere compliments to these fine performers.. I will try to seek their other performances of this piece as mentioned in another post.

    This is an outstanding composition.

Truly accomplished solists!!! The Salvation Army is extremely fortunate, financially speaking, to have the means available to acquire players with this level of professionalism.

  • noone in SalArmy bands get paid, they're all volunteers : )

  • Playing in the band at SA worship services is like being in the choir at church. In fact, some of them will sing an anthem as occasion demands. My grandparents were in the SA, so I would play in the youth band when visiting and then in the adult band next to my grandpa. It is in your blood.

  • There are plenty of excellent volunteer bands, and more than a few professional grade musicians who play for love, not money.

  • yeah they don't get paid in salvo bands. Staff bands are supposed to be made up of Salvation Army officers who are paid to be officers, not bandsmen. But even now they let non officers in staff bands.

  • What is the name of the first piece in the video?

  • I¨m a musician of the Salvation Army and i play in my corp and doesn´t paidme for play I DO IT!! Because i love Jesús. That´s my reason

  • These guys do not get paid to play in these Bands.

Staff Bands are great examples to all

  • Suggest you check your facts, go along and ask the musicians

  • Praise the Lord !! God bless all these fine musicians.....

  • Just think - at least 8 years of music camp as children followed by years and years of practice....possibly even teaching music = being awesome....no pay and no gain but spiritual gain up in heaven!

  • whether these people are paid or not, thats not what matters, what matters is how these people being used to play to bring comfort and blessings to the truoubled soul for the glory of God thru this medium type of ministry of the Salvation Army in music. The music played are all exellent and brilliant. I always love to hear salvation army bands, small and great. GO go go bandsmen for the glory of God.
