We lost one of our greatest vocalists of all-time earlier this year. I have long been a fan of the late Jo Stafford and thought I'd share one of her finest recordings (in my opinion) from one of her 1950's albums. This song is titled "By The Fireside" on the album but really is the old song "In The Gloaming." The vocal group behind Miss Stafford is the wonderful Starlighters and the orchestra is, of course, Jo's husband, Paul Weston. There's really nothing to see here as this really is all about the music. Sit back and enjoy the dreamiest of the dreamy...

  • This is as good as it gets folks, what an absolute delight her voice is, not to mention the harmony backing her. Not the Pied Pipers I feel. But who? Can anyone help.

  • Hey check out the description for more details on the song. It's The Starlighters. I don't know much about them except they recorded with Jo a lot in the late 1950's and 1960's.

  • You're correct it is The Starlighters. The Starlighters were more less a carryover of the Six Hits and a Miss which were popular prior to WWII. Vince Degen, Howard Hudson, Tony Paris were all part of the Six Hits. The Starlighers consisted of Vince Degen, Howard Hudson, Tony Paris, Imogene Clark and Jerry Duane. They did a lot with Jo on the Chesterfield Show, her TV show and a lot of her recordings in the late '40s and 50's. I have photos of Jo, Paul Weston and the Starlighters.

  • Thanks for the information. That's the most complete info on the Starlighters that I have read to date. Talk about smooth...wow...that sound is so smooth!

  • I am glad that she gets lots of Christmas play with this and many other of her traditional and non traditional songs....this is one of my favorites too!

  • This is definitely before my time but I absolutely love Jo Stafford. She had a voice like none other!

  • One of my all-time favorite Jo records. Beautiful vocals, superb arrangement.

    Thanks for posting!
