Here I'm mixing lag and castable on a spare kiln shelf to malk a bed for the large refractory block that will be part of the chamber and base of the stack above the exit flue.
Lag is the mix of 50lbs. Fireclay, 50lbs EPK Kaolin, and 10lbs. Kyanite/Mullite or fine grog I use to "mortar" the bricks. There is no cement involved because it can't take the heat, however the Alsey Hi-Cast I add to fill in odd shapes is a high temperature castable and I get the water for it from the lag which gives it some plasticity so I can move it around a bit. Castable is pretty chunky and stiff!
What is "lag"?
