Brave New Films put this question to Celinda Lake, pollster for the Coakley campaign, and Stephanie Taylor from the Progressive Change Campaign Committee.
Forget the conventional wisdom about moving to the center versus moving toward the base: both parties have been bought and paid for by corporate special interests, Lake argues, and consequently, the Tea Party Patriots have become a more popular political force than either the Democratic or the Republican Party.
@Neosaigo Congress & obama R responsible 4 what is happening now. obama took over health care, car companies, insurance companies, wall street, bailed out billionaires, lied about transparency & the US people being able 2 view potential policies on the internet for 72 hours before they'd be vote. Now he tells us how much we can earn, what we can eat & who we should hate, He's book smart & reality stupid. he bows 2 dictators & enemies of the US, & alienates our friends. He's an enemy of the US.

You mean Bush right? Only an idiot believe Obama is the one that caused all of that.
Obama is responsible for unable to repair the damage caused by 8 years of Bush in 2 years. Laughable, but that is the main point.

Speaking as a Massachusetts resident, I can tell you why Scott Brown beat Coakley. Because Coakley spoke as if the seat she was trying to fill belonged to Kennedy, and she acted like she had a right to it simply because she was a Democrat.
Also, both political parties need to be more moderate. Most Americans are moderates. Politicians should try representing their people more and their own pet ideologies less.

The Democrats have really screwed up. They had it all and fu*%&ed it all up. This is a clear indication that both parties have been corrupted by the corporations People wake up the Dems, and the Repubs are the SAME party. We are no longer a Democracy we are a plutocracy.

Tea party people have republicans democrats & independent. No Stephanie dimwit, people won't shoot anything that moves, we know exactly where the shots R going, & they are going to liberal policies. & NO we don't want dems 2 B more progressive. U just don't get it. Yes it WAS a referendum on the health care bill. Get the hell out of Caimbridge & take a look around the country 4 a reality check. Obama ruined the economy, health care, jobs, energy, oil disaster and still won't listen. Like you.

Coakley was a terrible campaigner? How about a horrible and miserably dis-honest politician? You think she lost cuz she didn't campaign well? NO! She lost because people saw she was scum, like her hired scumbag workers who physically abused and pushed people around. Those kind of people we can do without. She is done permanently. And good riddance.

It is never going to get any better in this country until education standards are raised back up to where they were in 1955; the start of desegregation; and the NEA is kicked out of the public school system. No great nation has ever collapsed from without before it collapsed from within first. The democratic party intends to turn this once great nation into a third world, undeveloped, communist country like Cuba and North Korea.

In answer to the question in the headline, Democrats lost in Massachusetts because Martha Coakley was an almost unimaginably terrible campaigner.
