President Obama delivers controversial school speech - Sept. 08, 09 -

Obama delivered the noontime speech from a high school in Arlington, Virginia.

Many conservatives over the past week had expressed a fear that the president's address would be used to push a partisan political agenda. In the text of the speech posted Monday on the White House Web site, however, Obama avoided any mention of controversial political initiatives. He repeatedly urged students to work hard and stay in school.

"No matter what you want to do with your life, I guarantee that you'll need an education to do it," he said.

"This isn't just important for your own life and your own future. What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country."

Several Cabinet officials are slated to deliver similar messages at various schools across the country throughout the day.

In the past week, news of Obama's upcoming speech had upset some parents.

  • Some people find "stay in school and do your best" to be contradictory to their values :) especially if it's coming from Obama. Some people even labeled his speech as "socialist brainwashing". I guess they expect a president to tell children to drop out of school and be dumbasses.

  • Hahahah. What an idiot.

How does "Do well in school" = communism. Get a life you conservative idiot.

  • @A08041988 also get rid of "hobby" majors like art and ceramics. why not just give majors in video game playing? I also think children as young as seven should learn basic business concepts. If a seven year old can learn that 7-5=2, what is so difficult about understanding that if revenue = 7 and expenses = 5, then profit = 2?

I also feel middle and high school students need to study more science, both physical AND social (sociology, psychology, political science, etc)

  • I agree that students need to work hard, but at the same time our education system needs a major overhaul. Get rid of tenure, athletic scholarships, AND FIRE PROFESSORS THAT ARE LAZY, RELUCTANT, AND EXPECT STUDENTS TO DO ALL THE WORK

  • What is controversial in this speech? What he says makes perfect sense.

  • The future of America also depends on jobs that don't require their definition of schooling. We need bus drivers. We need mechanics. We need barbers. I'm fairly certain that the h.s. dropout who fixes my car, so I can be productive, isn't a failure to our country. Neither is the barber who cuts my childrens hair (who had to quit school to help his family in hard times). Education is not a right. This sounds like an indoctrination into the smurf village of socialism.

  • Our education system is not designed to inform people. Its designed to indoctrinate. Its an indoctrination system

  • what's wrong with the speech ?

  • this is no way controversial. this is what school principals and caring adults tell throughout the entirety of your childhood.

If people take a statement such as this as a type of political propaganda favoring any political party or interests:

"if you quit on school, you are quitting on your country"

    then please tell me why...

  • I do not care for the man as far politics go, but I continue to pray for him and that he leads our country to better things.

  • @laclavicie some people just can't handle the truth, that's why some say this speech is controversial, why they say so is beyond me

  • Look...I am not a fan of Obama. But what he is saying here is true. It's nice to hear him say something I agree with. Despite my aversion to most of the stuff he says he should be in our prayers.

Kids need to get off the tv and the xbox and open some books and learn about things.
