Flashingflash- Yes, you're right. Basically, matte painting is creating an environment/background from photographs. Photographs combined with photoshop painting to achieve a desired look is what its all about. Usually the company that you are working for would supply a hi-res photo called a plate and its up to the matte painter to add what is not there in reality. Its a very creative and complex method that takes many years of practice. All in all its about having fun.

Are you drawing everything from scratch or are you pasting pieces of mountains and then blending them into the desired environment?

Because I'm not fully aware of the concept of mattepainting.

This is how most matte paintings are done today. It's only still called matte "painting" for traditional reasons. Some people do call themselves "matte artists" or "digital matte painters" instead and paint from scratch only when need be, whether it be a whole thing or certain parts of a shot.
