The 2009 Willing and Able Award is being presented to a volunteer with a disability who has given outstanding service to the community.
John J. Trifiletti, Ph.D. has refused to be slowed down, despite becoming confined to a wheelchair as the result of an airplane crash. For the past four years he has served on the Board of the alliance for the Lost Boys of Sudan where he has played a major role in helping the organization obtain grants and scholarships for their tuition and books at FCCJ. He has been involved in the lives of these young refugees as they have struggled to adjust personally and academically to their new lives. John serves on the Board of Directors of five other nonprofit organizations, including the Independent Living Resource Center and Sister Cities. In that capacity, he chaired the fundraising efforts to purchase 40 wheelchairs for disabled individuals in Bahia Blanca, Argentina and led the humanitarian delegation to deliver them. John also helped plan the state sponsored Emergency Preparedness Conference for Persons with Disabilities. John Trifilettis selflessness and strength of character are an inspiration to us all.
