EA Community Day Full Game Review [Click "Show More" button"]
Today marked the first day of the EA Community Day here in Vancouver; the chance to play test the new NFS title "The Run", discuss the game with the devs and generally catch up with other community leaders. After we eventually found NFSTorque, the day started in earnest and we arrived at EA with the official plan being "Play The Run all day and enjoy".
We were given full developer copies of the games to play test with the chance to unlock everything and generally mess around. We were also told not to say too much on the storyline of the game because it is a pretty awesome storyline and they want to keep it under wraps for just now as they dont want to spoil it for anyone as there has been a lot of effort put into it... all I can say though is that its really good. The plot makes sense, its easy to identify with the characters and you genuinely want to see what happens unlike some titles where you dont really care what occurs.
The car handling is unlike anything Ive encountered in an NFS title before. I think the best way to describe it is Hot Pursuit (2010) meets Pro Street; the cars handle with a lot more realism than Hot Pursuit but not to the extent that you're worrying about tire pressure, brake fading and so on. NOS recharges over time and through aggressive driving which is perfect. This means that as things are getting difficult and you're playing dirty to get out of a tight spot, you're being rewarded with NOS which in turns helps you get back onto the path quickly.
So far the various types of races I've seen have been:
1 - Overtake x number of opponents before race end:
In this one there is a sprint course set out that you need to overtake a preset number of opponents before the end of the course. As The Run is effectively one giant race, the place you take carries over to the next race.
2 - Battle:
This is pretty much the same as above except there will only be a few cars but they're generally a bit more difficult. Each car has to be passed in a certain time to progress and the lead time needs to be held to count it as a successful pass.
3 - Evade:
In this mode there are other cars chasing you (like the police) and you need to get the hell out of there to the end of the race course.
4 - Checkpoint:
Make it to each point before the timer runs out.
There may be more but I've only been playing for an hour or so so far! The car selection is amazing, possibly the most varied I've seen to date in an NFS title to boot, and the handling difference between each car is very noticeable to the point that you'll find yourself needing to change cars depending on the track type (so yeah, dont bother trying to take that lovely GT2 round a dirt mountain path at any great speed ;) ).
The courses themselves are beautifully rendered and generally fully interactable; at one point going along a country road I got bumped off the tarmac and ended up ploughing through trees, bushes, fences and a bit of someone's front garden before bouncing back onto the track. If you venture too far off though you will be reset back to the road.
Interesting point for all you pro-Canyon fans: one of the early battle races sees you effectively doing a Canyon Battle and it's pretty damn epic.
There's a pretty cool reset feature thats available during races too. If you take a corner too wide, crash or mess up in any way you can roll back to the last checkpoint. Depending on the course (and difficulty settings I think) you have a limited number of resets.
The game sounds pretty ace. I haven't been able to hear too much of the soundtrack (when you have about 20 copies of the game all running at the same time in the room it can be quite hard to distinguish what's going on where!) but the sound effects of the various engines are all spot on from the deep rumble of the stang to the purr of the Porsche 911 GT2.
This game has been a long time in the making and the polish shows. I've already mentioned it above but the storyline is so epic and it pulls you through the levels perfectly. On top of that as it is effectively just one long race, although you're never racing on the same track (no loops, no mirror modes etc). If you've played through the whole game and feel ready for something new there's an exciting Challenge Series similar to what you had in Carbon where you have to do certain courses with criteria to meet. These Challenge Series modes are named Underground Series, Most Wanted Series and Carbon Series.
