Source Says Chinese Lawyer Gao Zhisheng is Still Alive
2010-1-22 11:39

Prominent Chinese human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng could still be alive, despite fears that he had been killed in custody in China.

Chinese authorities abducted Gao in February last year. He has not been charged with anything.

Supporters say he had been a target of the Chinese Communist Party after he represented a Falun Gong practitioner in 2004, and later advocated for the persecuted spiritual group.

In 2007 police detained and tortured Gao, who then published an account of the 10 days of torture he experienced, drawing international attention to his case.

Speculation that he had been killed comes after a policeman told Gaos brother that Gao had gone missing while in custody in September last year.

According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald this week, a source in the Chinese regimes security apparatus said that, Gao is still alive at presenthe's not missing.'' The source did not indicate Gaos condition or his prospects.

HELP FREE Gao Zhisheng!!!

Christian human rights attorney Gao Zhisheng was seized by a dozen police
officers and last seen in public on February 4, 2009. Gao Zhisheng has been
repeatedly kidnapped, arrested, imprisoned and tortured by Chinese authorities
for defending the persecuted. He has been an unyielding voice for justice in
the Chinese courts and was even nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008.
On October 29, 2009, a member of Mr. Gaos legal defense team, Attorney Jiang
Tianyong, joined five other legal defenders in Washington, D.C. in testifying
before the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission on the treatment of human rights
lawyers and the cases they defend in China. Mr. Jiang spoke openly about Mr.
Gao, not allowing him to be forgotten—but Attorney Gaos own voice continues
to be silenced.
According to the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., Gao Zhisheng was
allegedly tried in the Chinese courts, convicted of crimes against the
State, and released on parole in early August, 2009. There is no public
record of these events. A phone call to his brother, Gao Zhiyi, in August
confirmed Gao Zhisheng to be alive-but our latest report from inside sources
indicates he is still being held and tortured severely. His whereabouts are
still unknown.
