One last thing, another factor statistics seldom address in regards to African American health issues is stress. In this society of hurry and wait, not enough time to do this that or the other it takes a toll on the body. Lets not forget the stress of being black in a society geared towards whiteness. These aren't excuses but facts. The medical establishment knows this but always seem to negate this in regards to blacks and disease (dis-ease),the very word implies not relaxed.
People need to take the time and study their ancestors eating habits to find out what types of food they should be consuming for optimum health. Black people be they from the islands, Britain, or elsewhere in the world dietary needs are not one size fit all. One thing for sure they must not take what the medical establishment says about them as 100% fact due to that industry being driven by prescriptions (money) and not cures.
When I went back to eating like my country elders, including using lard and coconut oil I found my health improved. A meal with the rural family included an assortment of veggies as well as all that stuff city folks have been lead to believe were bad for them.
Folks don't understand the medical industry is a greedy deceiving industry so when they started telling blacks they should eat a certain way that's when diabetes, heart disease, and high cholesterol became a problem for blacks.
You're a thinking brother and I like that. African Americans in the 70s were targeted on eating pork, lard, and butter and were propagandized into to thinking they were more prone to heart disease and high blood pressure. When black people ate diets like their forebears they lived longer and had fewer health problems. I researched my own family tree and spoke with my rural elders and found the city folks were tricked into believing their diets were ghastly and would cost them their health.
I don't think it is just African Americans who are targeted by drug advertisements for unnecessary meds in the USA. I've seen other adverts made to make you feel paranoid about conditions you may not even have. This is the market influence of private pharmaceutical companies....
It is not allowed to advertised prescribed medicines on TV in the UK. As you say, it should be down to your doctor whether you need a specific drug, and you need to know why you need it.
Diet is everything. You just do not see people who have African ancestry eating all McDonald's etc. in Nordic countries of Europe. I know I am oversimplifying but cheap fast food has no nutrition value and that's the core reason. There may be other factors involved but certainly personal diet has a huge impact. (I've cooked almost all my food for the past eight years, using for example zero salt, and I haven't been to a doctor for ages ... And I used to be sick a lot before ...)
I also wanted to include that alot of these meds have serious side effects. It best to fight disease the naural way with healthy food like fruits, veggies and seafood. why take meds for high blood pressuren then suffer side effects like headaches nausea and clod like symptoms, next I am going to need new meds to take care of the side effects
There are disease that affect white people more then blacks, but when they do a report on those disease they most of the time do not include the fact that the disease affects whites the most, examples are skin cancer, alzhemiers and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and others. In general educated people tend to live longer then uneducated people. Blacks tend to be less educated. With education when you know better you do better, so educated people make better decsions on being healthy.
Soul food is delicious but it is bad for you. Most of the black Americans that I know eat soul food or a steady diet of McDonalds.
