Asheville resident Mary Ellen "Mel" Hughes talks about her project to help raise money to fund research into what's causing the deaths of thousands of honey bees. Colony collapse disorder is killing off honey bees, which are critical to pollinating plants. Hughes teamed up with Black Mountain artist Jay Pfeil to create a calendar featuring Pfeil's original paintings of bee-friendly plants. The calendars cost $20 each. Hughes hopes to put the calendars in independent books stores, garden shops and other stores across the country, with part of the proceeds going to honey bee research. Hughes wants to raise $150,000 this year for bee research. For more information, go to www.abeeloversgarden.com for more information.
