breath taking song, wow her vocals are so strong in this...remember when I used to sing this one, but since my cancer diagnosis..I haven't sung anything and my vocals suck now!

Her sister is actually still alive, but at that point in Mariah's life she was basically a lost loved one, so I can see why people interpret it that way

Its actually about her sister Alison who is 10 years older than her, who left home at a young age and got involved in drugs and prostitution and got HIV. She is singing about how she is losing touch with her hence the lyrics "suddenly hard to see, you're taking the light, you're fading out of my sight, swiftly you're vanishing, drifting away". It makes perfect sense when you read up about her sister, its a sad story.
