It is a special investigative report that prepared by Rita Nahar of Boishakhi TV on how Tobacco Company gets benefit in the name of tax hike on tobacco before every year budget.
Due to insignificant tax imposition on tobacco products in the budget, tobacco companies are getting opportunity to earn more though government could not get higher revenue, experts said. Considering all these things, government is planning to withdraw the provision of income tax exemption for tobacco companies, the report said.
The reporter revealed that tobacco companies earn unethical profit by utilizing the fear of possible price hike and the gap between the proposed and approved budget in every year. As a result tobacco companies get additional profit but government did not get any additional revenue from it. The reporter also mentioned the proposed tax measures on tobacco in the budget 2011-12.
The reporter used interview of three important persons on this issue, Mr. Taifur Rahman, Advocacy and Media Coordinator of CTFK; Dr. Akbar Ali Khan, former adviser of caretaker government of Bangladesh and Mr. MA Muhith, Finance Minister of Bangladesh government.
