Once upon a time in the seventies a science fiction movie arrived in theaters that redefined what movies could be. Exciting, magical, overwhelming! That movie of course, was Star Wars...then Paramount said "What do we have that we can use to milk these sci-fi fans dry with?"

Thus Star Trek made its debut in film, with Star Trek: The Motion Picture, a story so big, so massive, so filled with endless repetitive and slow paced miniature effects shots, that it took the big screen to hold it all.

Now if they'd put anything else worthwhile in the movie it might be remembered more fondly, but what the heck, that's what Star Trek II is for.

Ronin Fox Trax presents this fan-riff (the first one from RFT intended for Rifftrax's iRiffs section) of the biggest false start to a major film franchise we may ever see.

This sample is for a commentary track being sold on mp3, in order to use it you must provide your own copy of the DVD.

  • This movie is better then Star Trek II, guys

  • We'll have to disagree on that, but I'll concede that it's a matter of taste. I prefer the pace of Star Trek II and the fact that it has an antagonist with a face (And the superb acting of Montalban no less) as opposed to this film which is primarily dedicated to watching the Enterprise float.

  • @RoninFoxTrax they are both better than Star Trek: Insurrection. At least the continuity error of Chekov not being in Space seed.

  • ST:TMP AND TWOK are the best Trek movies. If we take the best qualities from these 2 movies like Epic, grandeur and science fiction elements from TMP and action and character moments from TWOK. We would have all right elements for a great Trek film.

  • Indeed and for me it's the best of the Trek films, along with "The Undiscovered Country".

  • "Surak shrugged," LOL.

  • You do mean the MSTing of the movie, right? Not the ACTUAL boring slow sleep inducing movie.

  • Oh my God, HYSTERICAL!
