ANCHOR:
And President George W. Bush is now pushing congress to allow for oil exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. As Well as asking lawmakers to approve new refineries to increase gasoline supplies. Lets get the full story.

STORY:
U.S. President George W. Bush said the U.S. economy is facing a "tough time" as rising food and energy prices and a weak housing market curb growth, and faulted Congress for inaction.

[George W. Bush, US President]:

"This is a tough time for our economy."

At a Rose Garden news conference Bush was asked whether the US economy is in a recession.

[George W. Bush, US President]:

"The words on how to define economy don't reflect the anxiety the American people feel. The average person does not care what we call it they want to know that we know that they are paying higher places."

Bush pushed for lawmakers to approve new refineries to increase gasoline supplies, and allow oil exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska and said Congress just does not get it.

[George W. Bush, US President]:

"I can only say it is either a lack of leadership or a lack of understanding and either way it is a bad signal for the country."

Bush said he was concerned about high food prices, and open to all ideas on helping the economy, including a proposed summer moratorium on gasoline prices.

On the international front, Bush weighed in on the recent election turmoil in Zimbabwe.
Checking on votes from Zimbabwe's dispute presidential poll was put off again on Tuesday.

  • I think that this is a smart thing.

  • I have to take back all the times I said Bush is stupid. He's smart enough to join oil companies in raising gas prices but then to dupe an easily led public into believing it is the democratic Congress's fault. Gas prices are not due to supply/demand. They are simply a way of big oil trying to blackmail Americans into supporting more drilling here so they can ruin our environment and make money off it. More drilling is NOT the answer, and Bush is a liar.

  • CO2 shouldn't be an issue. it's not even a good greenhouse gas. let me guess, you saw an inconvenient truth. we can't complain about gas prices, and complain about someone trying to do something about it at the same time.

  • the price of gasoline at the pumps has nothing to do with the "lack of suppliers" or "stupid Arabs..." Look at 1st quarter corporate profits of Shell, BP, Exxon, etc... The lower gasoline was promised before the envasion of Iraq... keep believing this nonsense and keep drinking your soda pop!!! LOL

  • Holy shit - does Bush actually have a good idea for once? Seriously, when Americans can't afford to drive to work, we need to look into options like this

  • Considering CO2 that is being emitted, there is no point in increasing supplies. Conservation and alternative energy are way forward.
