I wrote and copied the letter. I appended a message suggesting an alternative:

Allow conscientious objectors the opportunity to perform equivalent duration national service of a peaceful nature, rather than either joining the military, or failing to serve altogether and consequently being jailed for it.

I am a believer in national service myself, and a combat veteran, though I chose to serve as a medic, because I do not believe in violence.
