btw, I actually got DVI to output audio once...it was really strange. I used a mini-displayport to DVI (male) , then a DVI to HDMI. Any idea on how this happened?

@gmanx95, Thanks for your comment. Yes, that’s possible but I wouldn’t count on it working in every setup. HDMI is based on DVI and share the same number of pins for a digital connection, 19 pins. HDMI basically hijacked DVI and put a different connector on it. They didn’t add any more wires, they just used some of the existing lines to carry the audio signal

I’ve done tests myself where, using passive adapters went from HDMI to DVI and back to HDMI and I didn’t lose the audio. If the Mini-DP port supports HDMI audio (must be HDMI audio and not just DP audio), then you can get audio from Mini-DP to DVI to HDMI.
