Credit unions want to make more loans to their members with small businesses -- but banks want to block them from doing so. In this tale, the Little Guy -- the credit union member -- learns about the obstacles his credit union faces from bankers, and what Congress can do about it.

kdh1973,
your comments just provide proof to the arrogance of banks and the reason they don't take care of the customer unless they have money or can fee them in bankruptcy. It is not about socio-economic markets, it is about providing the quality of service and financial literacy that consumers should have access to. It is about choice and it sounds like the banks are afraid of the credit unions providing those choices. Maybe there afraid of the competition.

Likewise, if credit unions have such a competitve advantage, banks can convert to a credit union charter. Why are they not? You make the grass sound so green over there?

No, banks serve all socio-economic markets. Banks pay taxes and want credit unions to operate on a level playing field. If you want to be a bank, then pay taxes. If you don't want to pay taxes, remain a credit union. You can continue to offer basic services, so stop complaining.

So, in other words, banks only want to establish relationships with people with lots of money -- not the Little Guy? Yeah ... that sounds about right ...
