What job at the Calgary Zoo takes an eight-person zoo team, a machinist, a welder, and a 10-tonne hoist on standby? Simple . . . giving our bull elephant new tusk caps!

For the second time in a decade, on Wednesday, August 4, the zoo's bull elephant was fitted with new stainless steel tusk caps in a procedure lasting more than two hours. The second set of caps, custom-designed by SAIT Polytechnic's School of Manufacturing and Automation and fitted by the Zoo's elephant care team, were necessary to prevent Spike from damaging his tusks further.
