game art is so broad.. if your more of a "drawer" concept artist your better off going to an illustration school.. most people who i know go into game art get the whole scope of the game pipeline.. there is a very different technical tedious mathematical process in game development.. a lot of core artists never last in that aspect... but then none ever get hired as concept artist later on.. illustrators do.

I been doing it online for a year now.....Love it. 3.81 gpa most the time lol. It is hard but easy if you want it. You need a passion. And your right about knowing people. I been using 3ds Max i have zbrush but haven't not heard of its use in the school yet. But Im a fourth of the way done. Don't do this if you can't draw or are not willing to spend tons of time Learning to draw. I suck at video games and Im great at art. You can do it if your like me.

I love learning new things on a "extended" Trial version of Maya 2011, Zbrush, Photoshop, And would like to go to college for a Graphic design or Game art degree.

I also love photography and photo editing. But... I'm not very good at Drawing... What do you suggest for me in the way of colleges? By the way I live in Colorado.
