Due to concerns about build quality, battery life, and overall durability of the HP HDX 16t, I returned it and ordered the Dell Studio XPS 1640. These are my first impressions...
There are a lot of big differences in the two machines, which I will try to go over in the next couple videos, in case anyone is interested.
Right away, the omission of a numeric keypad bothers me more than i was hoping. however, the keyboard on the Dell is so much more sturdy feeling, that it may well turn out to have been a worthy sacrifice. Also, the lack of a physical button or switch to toggle the touchpad is frustrating for me, as I like to rest my thumbs right below the spacebar but that is where the touchpad is!
One last quick note from first impressions: the laptop also warms up relatively fast in comparison to the HDX, and it stays hot after just an hour or two of regular use. I wouldn't say the area below the keyboard has been scorching hot, but definitely has already gotten on the uncomfortable side of warmth, which just concerns me more about the machine's long-term reliability than anything else.
It's a sweet looking laptop tho! lighter than the HDX, and much more sturdy, metallic-feeling design. I definitely prefer the awesome paint job on this one to HP's swirly aesthetic. As you can see, the case is still a glossy fingerprint magnet, but the paint itself is somewhat mesmerizing. There are tiny, glittery, flecks of gold, red, and green in the paint, which give the case an almost iridescent sheen under more direct light.
I'm considering buying this.
would you recommend it?
