The song was recorded on March 23, 1955 with Nelson Riddle conducting the orchestra, and amazingly it became Sinatra's only number one song from this decade of hits recorded for Capitol. There is a tawdry little story behind how this song came to Frank that, though unsubstantiated, is kind of interesting. The song was written by a lady named Dolores Vicki Silvers, and a man named Joe Valino had apparently recorded a demo of it a year before Sinatra made this recording. So the story goes, Frank heard Valino's demo and apparently liked it well enough to "steal" the song. Some say he even went as far as having Valino's life threatened if he didn't "give it up", but the story seems a little thin considering there was nothing stopping Frank from recording his own version anyway. It wasn't as if songs had never been "covered" before, and it was more than commonplace during the 1950's.

  • I knew Mrs. Silver and I don't thing that story is true. She told me Sinatra loved the song and wanted to record it, but she never said he threatened them for it.

  • @MissKitty856 I kind of doubt this was true as well...just another Sinatra "legend". Thanks for the note...Lanny (Nocaro)
