This is a beautiful way to kick off an Ice gala. The Richmond Arena has unfortunately been torn down, but this video shows what a fantastic Victorian space it was.

Nice to know it IS possible to make a 14-step look good. It just takes a giant skirt!!

  • @scubalal - Hi, Yes, I think there are quite a few of us out there who miss the place. When they were campaigning to save it they started to sell videos about the ice rink to raise money. It's turned out to be a nice momento even if the campaign was unsuccessful. Used to like going to the St Ivel competitions as well. They don't seem to be held anywhere now.

  • @bremnerrules - Thanks for the update. I never realised they did actually use the land in the end. I don't think ice-skating will ever be a priority sport in the UK but that ice rink had a special atmosphere and was always a great place to go. I don't think Streatham has quite the same atmosphere; unfortunately, someone got shot there not so long ago. Not quite what you want to happen when you're practising your three-turns!

  • @TheTubeMouse hiya, this rink was my 2nd home, and sadly the luxury flats did go ahead, but the promise of a new rink didn't. nice to read your post and know someone else loved that old place. ;)

  • @majeproductions64 Yes 1986.

  • I remember seeing lots of ice shows and competitions on TV here in Canada from the richmond ice rink.

I actually have lots of video from the 80s taken from this rink.

  • @TheTubeMouse

They did build the flats TubeMouse. They fetch anything from about £400,000 up to several million £s. There was a promise at the time to relocate the rink elsewhere in Richmond but it never materialised (surprise, surprise). Very sad.

  • Used to love going to Richmond until the grisly property developers got their hands on it. Despite many protests by locals and skaters alike they still tore it down - as far as I'm aware it was the intention to build luxury flats on the site (wouldn't you know it!). The flats never materialised from what I heard so everyone lost out.

  • I think the year is 1986 not 1990 as stated
