This is a rare world-premere recording of the Rode Caprices revealing Mr Oscar Shumsky as one of the best soloists the world has ever known: deadly accurate intonation, effortless technique, a warm lush tone, expressive vibrato, and ultimately the ability to create musical drama. I can say he was easily my favorite of all Auer pupils and when you hear a recording like this it makes you wonder how many more incredible performances he has made that should have been captured but never were! Without a doubt he was one of the true greats of the 20th Century!

I have uploaded rare out of print and unreleased recordings that are difficult to find, I hope you like them.

Since they are so difficult to find no one should mind me uploading them, if you have issues with me uploading them please send me a message and I will remove them.

  • It is interesting to note that he is using Pierre Rodes own Stradivari in these recordings. His violin was a Stradivari of 1715 known as 'Ex-Pierre Rode' or the 'Duke of Cambridge' (source from Wikipedia).

  • this is just amazing. i'm listening to this for study, but its helped me so much musically and technically. i've been looking for recordings of the rode caprices. thanks so much, you are amazing, and shumsky is beautiful and delicious.

  • second caprice was my region allstate piece. he totally plays it 50 times better than me though

  • Wonderful to hear. These same studies have been transcribed for clarinet and form an important foundation for clarinet study as well.

I will now direct mine to listen to Shumsky to hear how the same music can become magical in the hands of a great violinist.

  • thank you for putting this up, im working on this and I need it!! thanks alot!! =]

  • well, i am totally amazed by his technique and tone no matter how many times i hear it.

  • I am pretty sure he is playing on a Stradivarius violin.
