When I was in 9th grade, my biology teacher said that it was a type of protein that collects at the edge of your eye while you're asleep.

My mom just calls it eye boogers.

In portuguese they're called "Ramelas" which means something close to prostitutes. They're actually bits of dust and and stuff that gets into your eyes, and during the night the eye movements move them to the corner, and when they dry they become what we know and hate :)
