No no no and my god no! You must never do that! Axes are never meant to be hit, at all, ever! It WILL ruin them. No question about it, no one who knows what they are doing would even consider that.

lol, that's the way i still split logs. Well, i use a mual, but when that doesn't work, i resort to the wedge, and an 8 ib slege. I go though quite a bit of wood a day this way, my house is mainly wood heated. We have central heat, but it doesn't get run that much.
