I just bought mine and looking at the procedure before I start, thank you.

@dsmtsi Kwikset Key Control Deadbolts are on average about $35 depending on finish. If you can't find it in your local Home Depot or supply store you can special order them with Home Depot or Lowe's. They come in the Polished Brass and Satin Nickel.

@dsmtsi You're correct, anybody can rekey these as long as they have a working key. Once you give a key to a tenant, they can stick their key in there, and change it to whatever they want, BUT they can't rekey the landlord's lock, their key won't fit, and without a working key, they can't rekey it.
On a side note, I'm a locksmith of 13 years. Smartkey is garbage. Most of us won't sell them because they don't last. Like others said, they randomly stop working. I like regular Kwikset stuff tho.

@LandlordingTV Hey I haven't had many problems other than a repeated problem with tenants keys randomly not working. Other than that the locks worked pretty well. I recently got back from the Mr.Landlord conference in St Luis and have started using the LandlordLocks(.)com locks. You should definitely give them a call. Now that I have switched over to their locks i wont be using anything else. Are you a Mr.Landlord member?

@jgproperty6 The tool he whips out at 3:06 almost does look like a hairpin.
Hey JGProperty, great tip about the bobby pin, these pins are easy to lose, so thanks for the tip! I LOVE these locks, had them about a year now, on 6 units and have been fantastic! Have you run into any problems with yours?

Hey dsmtsi!
The piece of metal is VERY small and thin, it would be hard to find a piece of metal to fit it properly (I haven't tried but I think it's too thin for a bent paperclip even), but if the Tenant were to change the lock, you still have a separate cylinder for your master key, which fits only bonded keys.

Thanks for your reply.
I just bought my first rental unit, get possession Friday, I am looking for this Kwikset Key Control Deadbolt but can't find it in my area.
All I could find was Weiser knock off's but they don't have the 2nd cylinder for the master key.
How much was the Kwikset Key Control Deadbolt?

Congratulations on your first rental property! Ah, yeah I would stick with Kwikset. You can get them at TrueValue, or Do It Best Hardware stores!
