Tokyo Highway Battle is one of many games within the long-running Shutokō(u) Battle series, known as many different things Internationally ranging from "Tokyo Highway Battle", "Tokyo Xtreme Racer", " Tokyo Highway Challenge", "Import Tuner Challenge", "Street Supremacy", ecetera. This was one of the first games released stateside along with the Sega Saturn "Highway 2000, aka Wangan Dead Heat", though they are different games, just to clarify (and HW2000 came first).

This is an old, but pretty good racing game that isn't particularly hard to find, but has very little information or recognition, much like Highway 2000 (though this game is much better than HW2000). It was uncommon for a 3D racing game of the time to have as much car customization as this game allows, and you can drive a number of cars while competing for cash. It's also known partially as "Drift King" for a reason, as you can bob in and out of traffic and drift on really tight turns. Otherwise, it's your standard arcade-style racer by Genki.

The graphics aren't as good as some of the competition of the time, though the opening movie is very nice. The sense of scale is pretty good, but it seems to have come at the expense of relatively low draw distance and lots of graphics clipping. The game doesn't have a large selection of music, but this isn't uncommon to old racers. Some good tunes include Labyrinth and Night Wind.

The game originally got the subtitle of "Drift King" after the trademark nickname of street racing and professional racing driver Keiichi Tsuchiya who is featured in the first Shuto Kousoku Trial episodes and endorsed the game with, then team manager, Masaki Bandoh of the Bandoh Racing Project. It's really cheap these days, so I'd get it if you're a collector or fan of racing games. Enjoy.

  • Wish this came out on the Saturn in the US... I know it did come out on said console in Japan, though.

  • @Kranical

it was more than just guitar riffs, it was amazing, very original and it even gets your spirits high!

  • @Tiamat583 You must just like guitar riffs...

  • I absolutely love the music in the intro. its one of the best songs never composed to a real song. It even blow Gran Turismo's moon over the castle theme right out of the water!!!

  • I played this game ALL the time in college. I always really liked the music.

  • I remember it was this game that got me into racing games. Sure, Ridge Racer was huge, but something about this game just seemed so awesome. Looking at it now, I have no idea what the hell I was thinking.

  • Tuskuba Circuit... A very challenging place to race and xcelent in GT4
